The Knock

Some newness is only the old motion again. Some is a hunt outside yourself. The Spirit is neither.

The distinction
I keep coming back to a difference, and I don't want a slogan that makes it smaller than it is. Here it is, only lightly cleaned.
Some people only recycle old motions. Some chase novelty outside themselves. The Spirit is neither. He is the newness that isn't self-generated — the knock that interrupts the closed loop. When someone is actually listening for that, their presence can wake the same interruption in someone else: not by pumping energy, but by not being closed.
I train, and I train other people, and I can feel the difference before I can defend it. One person arrives already inside yesterday's set. Another arrives hungry for a new program, a new account of why the last one failed. The tape changes. The hunger does not. Then, less often, someone is available to a correction they did not write. The hour changes, and not because anyone turned the volume up.
I don't trust the feeling. It sorts people too easily, and the sorting is itself a closed loop, with me filed among the open. I have been all three in the same afternoon.
In One Love, Many Shapes I asked whether a particular love was received or bent back toward me. This essay stays with the source, and leaves the shapes of love where that one put them. Where does a new motion come from, if it is not the last motion in a new shirt, and not a product I went out and bought?
Two ways of missing it
The first missing is easy to respect, which is how it survives. A person repeats. In the gym that can look like virtue: the same warm-up, the same loads, the same story about what a body is allowed to do. I have done it with cues I found years ago and am still saying because my mouth knows the way, not because I listened to the person in front of me. In the reader I called the persistence of past participation sedimentation. The word is a description, not an insult. A life that could not repeat would never become a practice. It would be a spark that never took.
The closure is the problem. Nothing is allowed to arrive that the pattern did not already contain. The person is not lazy. They are a competent circuit: expected input, last output. I have started to think of this as a robot attached to prior motions, and I mean it about myself before I mean it about anyone else. The robot can be devout. The prayers are then the same motions, said in order, so that nothing in the hour is permitted to revise the hour.
The second missing advertises itself as the cure. Bored of the tape, a person goes looking: a new split, a new teacher, a new identity for a month. My own phone delivers the feeling of newness without the cost of being changed. I consume difference so I do not have to be interrupted. The door opens onto more of the hunger that opened it. That is still a closed loop.
I can see the shape of a week. I cannot see far enough into another person to pronounce a motive, and I don't want that pronouncement. One week never risks a rep it did not already believe in. Another cannot stay with a rep long enough for the rep to teach anything. Both are busy. Neither is listening.
There is a third thing, and I only know it by how it fails both descriptions. It does not come from grinding the old motion finer, or from a stranger stimulus brought in to keep the self entertained. It arrives: a sentence I was not preparing, the sudden uselessness of a plan I had called faithfulness, another person's quiet making my script embarrassing. I have Christian names for that arrival. The names are easy. The arrival is not.
A sieve, not an arc
Before I use those names, I want a rival story of newness on the table, and I don't want to sneer at it. Terence McKenna argued for years that the universe is in the business of producing novelty. In an interview with John Hazard, filmed at his home in Hawaiʻi, he called the cosmos, as the published transcript has it, "a kind of novelty-producing engine," a machine that produces complexity "in all realms — physical, chemical, social, whatever — and then uses that achieved level of complexity as the platform for further complexity." He thought the rate steepened toward a culmination in December 2012, lined up with the end of the Mayan calendar. He also left a crack: even if he were wrong by a hundred years, or five hundred, the span would still be small against the life of the planet.
The vocabulary was not only his. On Art Bell's show, 22 May 1997, he said he had borrowed it from Alfred North Whitehead. Habit, as he defined it that night, is the repetition of what has already been achieved: conservation, a pattern held inside a system. Novelty is "the chance-taking, the exploratory, the new, the never-before-seen." His good news, on the long view, was that novelty is winning. Go backward and the world simplifies. Come forward and it complicates. He had a formal toy for the claim, the timewave, a curve drawn from the King Wen sequence of the I Ching and set out with his brother Dennis in The Invisible Landscape. I have not re-derived the wave. I am answering the picture.
December 2012 arrived. The end he was describing did not. I don't record that as a joke. He had already said he might be early. What fails is the single arc: novelty always gaining, habit always the drag, a point where history completes itself. The world I meet is ruder than that.
New things arise and vanish. A mutation that does not take. A training method that lights up a corner of the internet and leaves no stronger bodies behind it. A theory, including some of mine, that feels like dawn for a month and is a closed vocabulary by winter. A cruelty that is genuinely new is novel in exactly his sense, and it is not a victory of the cosmos. If novelty is the good, that cruelty counts. I will not give it that count.
What I trust more, as a metaphor and not as a physics, is a sieve. A great many novel things appear, and most of them go. A few persist because something can hold them: a body that repeats a skill, a promise a household keeps, a language other people can speak. Habit is not the villain. Habit is how anything lasts long enough to be more than a spark. Conservation can be a refusal of what is trying to arrive. It is also how what is worth keeping stays, and how the rest is let go.
That is an interpretation, and a disagreement with a metaphysic, not a measurement and not a doctrine. The sieve is the name I have for things I was sure were the future. The engine is half true. Complexity does compound. The half that is false is the promise of a single acceleration, and the promise that the new, as the new, is what the universe loves.
The entertaining outcome
There is a smaller myth inside the big one, and it travels further. At the end of January 2021, on Clubhouse, Elon Musk was talking about Dogecoin, a currency invented as a joke. CNBC reported him saying, "But fate loves irony," and then, "The most entertaining outcome and the most ironic outcome would be that dogecoin becomes the currency of Earth in the future." TechCrunch, writing up the same night, heard a cleaner law: "The most entertaining outcome is the most likely." I am not going to pretend those are one sentence. Spoken remarks get smoothed on the way into print. The idea people carried off is the cleaner law. The example was a joke about a joke. The subset I care about is the idea.
Irony is a real kind of newness: the outcome you did not write, the reversal that humiliates a confidence. I have lived weeks like that. I do not think the universe is an audience. Entertainment is novelty judged by a watcher. It needs a setup, a payoff, and someone for whom the twist lands. That is a subset of new things, not the engine of them. Bread getting made is not entertaining. A tendon getting stronger by increments too small to post is not entertaining. Neither is a truth that ruins the scene. A great deal of what persists is like that.
I notice this because the interruptions I actually trust are often poor entertainment. They do not get a laugh of recognition from the room. Elijah has just had fire fall in a public contest, and the next thing is not a bigger fire. Three days of not eating, on a street in Damascus, is not a twist anyone would buy a ticket for. A knock, while a church explains that it does not need a thing, is not content. If I start preferring the newness that would play well, I have left the knock and joined the audience. I like being the man who saw the reversal coming. The liking is not yet listening.
Not a force
I have talked about the Spirit as energy. The room has a charge the intense people bring and the flat people leak. The account makes newness measurable, and it makes me, on a good Sunday or a good session, a conductor. "It wasn't me, it was the energy." The humility still pictures a fluid. Openness becomes a wattage.
John will not give me the fluid. He is talking to Nicodemus about a birth from above, and he reaches for weather.
"The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." (John 3:8)
The NIV notes that the Greek word for Spirit is the same word as for wind. I don't take that as a person dissolving into weather. I take it as a limit on my hands. You hear the sound. You do not command the from or the to. The sign is not that you have become a source. It is a motion you did not plot.
Scripture also refuses to make God always quiet. At Pentecost the sign is "a sound like the blowing of a violent wind" filling the house (Acts 2:2). Elijah is the passage that keeps the whisper from becoming the only legal volume. A wind tears the rocks, then an earthquake, then a fire, and the Lord was not in any of them. "And after the fire came a gentle whisper" (1 Kings 19:12). The older English calls it a still small voice. The displays were real. He was not in them. Then a voice asks Elijah a question he has already answered: what are you doing here.
If I need the shatter before I will believe he passed by, I have looked for him in the clause that says he was not there. If I need the whisper before I will believe Pentecost, I have edited the book down to my temperament. The constant is not the volume. I do not steer it. A difference in a room can be a true report of bodies and still not be the Spirit. What I can talk about without lying is openness and closedness. A closed person can weep in a loud room and receive nothing, because every input confirms the loop. An open person can be stopped by an ordinary sentence. The door is a door, or it is a picture of one, painted where the house has decided it is finished.
Of the Spirit of truth, Jesus says, "He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears" (John 16:13). I will not build a system on one clause. If the sentence stands, the newness is received all the way down. He speaks what he hears. That bothers the part of me that still wants a generator.
The knock
The picture I trust is not an engine and not a field. It is a knock. "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me" (Revelation 3:20). The English a lot of us remember is older: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." I quote the NIV, and I keep the Behold, because Behold is a pointing. It stops a person. It is not a mood.
The letter is not first a poster for strangers who have never heard. It is to the church in Laodicea. The verse before the knock is the creed of a closed loop. "You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked" (Revelation 3:17). Lukewarm, in that paragraph, is not a lack of enthusiasm. It is a sufficiency. The door is shut because the people inside have concluded that the house is finished. I have used the verse as if it were mainly about other people's unbelief. Left in the letter, it reads like a description of my competence.
An older picture sits beside that letter, and I am not claiming John of Patmos is quoting it. "I slept but my heart was awake. Listen! My beloved is knocking" (Song of Songs 5:2). A heart can be awake inside a life that is sleeping. Opening is still a door. He comes in and eats. A spark that will not stay for a meal is the novelty that fails the sieve.
"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" (Isaiah 43:19). The new thing can already be underway and still be missed, because I am busy generating my own. The question is whether anyone is available to a motion they did not start.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17). I will not sand this until it matches a Monday, and I will not pretend the old has stopped volunteering. The sentence is a claim about being in Christ, not a diary of how original I felt on Thursday. What it will not let me say is that the newness was my product. If the new is here, it arrived.
Ezekiel is plainer about the agency. "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh... And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees" (Ezekiel 36:26–27). A heart of stone keeps its shape. The promise is not a more creative stone. It is removal, a spirit not mined from the old heart, and a moving. The feet can still be mine. The walk was not my idea the way a purchase is.
Galatians makes it a pace. "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16). The flesh and the Spirit "are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want" (Galatians 5:17). I used the fruit of the Spirit in the earlier essay to say love is not a wage, and I will not list it again. The sentence I need is "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25). A pace you did not set. The old desires do not leave the room. The step does not take its orders from them.
Saul is mid-errand, letters in hand, the old motion religious and at full speed. I wrote about the blindness in The Many Rooms, and I will not retell it. "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" (Acts 9:4). He did not generate the light or the question. The men with him "heard the sound but did not see anyone" (Acts 9:7). Then the newness has to pass through Ananias, who argues, is told to go, and goes in calling him brother, so that Saul might see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:17). The knock uses a frightened disciple, not a broadcast.
What passes between people
The second half of the distinction is the half I am most likely to counterfeit. When someone is actually listening, their presence can wake the same interruption in someone else. Not by pumping energy. By not being closed.
I know the counterfeit from the inside. I can raise a room: voice, pace, a story at the right minute. Bodies respond. Some of that is skill, and I don't despise skill. Some of it is me enjoying a circuit in which I am the source. If I call that the Spirit, I have baptized a performance. "Someone else felt something" is not a test. Audiences feel things.
Augustine's garden is the scene I trust more, because nobody is working the room. He is under a fig tree in Milan, asking why his uncleanness has to have another tomorrow. In the Confessions, as Pusey has it, he hears "from a neighbouring house a voice, as of boy or girl, I know not, chanting, and oft repeating, 'Take up and read; Take up and read'" (VIII.12). He does the sane thing. He checks whether children sing words like that in a game. He cannot remember ever hearing them. Then the sentence his eyes hit is Paul's, about putting on the Lord Jesus Christ and not making provision for the flesh. A voice from next door. He did not produce it. He tested it. The same page reaches Alypius, who reads one verse further and applies that verse to himself. The newness moves to a second person without a performance.
In Surprised by Joy, Lewis names Joy as "an unsatisfied desire which is itself more desirable than any other satisfaction," distinguished from happiness and from pleasure. The object, he later insists, is "something other, outside, not you nor any state of you." Self-generated novelty is a state of you. He wanted that sentence before he would say who the other was. I already say the name, and his caution should slow me. A hunger for interruption can itself be a loop, religiously decorated.
Simone Weil, writing to Joë Bousquet on 13 April 1942, said that attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity. Attention, in that line, is not an emission. A listening person is not radiating a force the rest of us failed to radiate. They are not closed. A script needs everyone else to be an audience or an obstacle, and a listening person is neither. I have felt that, and I have felt the imitation: a focused gaze that is still using me. The difference, when I can tell it, is whether I am being met or being worked.
On the floor the same cue can bounce off a story for weeks, and then a day comes when the person is available to hear it, for no reason I can take credit for. Often I said less. Sometimes the difference was another lifter, quiet, not performing openness. I will not build a method on that. The moment "not being closed" becomes a technique, I have closed, and I have made them an audience.
"We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans" (Romans 8:26). Not a better speech I finally generated. If someone else's presence helps me pray, it may be that they are not requiring a prayer they can recognize. I am suspicious of any paragraph, including this one, that sounds as if I know how to arrange that.
Where a knock can land
A knock has to land in a minute, or it is only a doctrine about knocks. I have called the Moment God's tool to enact his will — a theological framing, not a measurement. A newness that never arrives in a particular hour failed the sieve. It did not become a meal, or a step, or a changed rep.
In The Screwtape Letters the tempter — not Lewis's own voice — calls the Present "the point at which time touches eternity," and wants humans off it: "perpetually in pursuit of the rainbow's end," using "every real gift which is offered them in the Present" as fuel for an altar that is always later. The robot drags a past motion forward. The consumer lives at the rainbow. McKenna's culmination is a magnificent later. The knock is not scheduled for the end of a wave. "Here I am." A spirituality of the eventual new thing is a reliable way to miss the door.
I have come to think of the foot of the cross as rest, and I don't mean the collapse after overwork, which is the loop collecting its bill. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:28–29). The rest is a person, and a yoke, so it is not the absence of a direction. It is the end of generating the direction from inside the circuit. "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires" (Galatians 5:24). I do not live there. I turn rest into a deload, a managed pause whose purpose is to resume stronger. The foot of the cross, as I mean it, is where the motion may stop without being recycled at once into the next version of me. I believe that mercy is offered. I do not consistently take it.
Worship I have already written at length. In The God Who Kneels, what sits in the place of God forms the person who bows there. A closed loop is a liturgy. Listening is a different one: it shapes by what it consents to receive. I can sing a true song and stay closed. The question is whether the last word is still mine. The knock is what that listening is for. A visitor, not an experience to bank.
In the reader the System is larger than anyone's picture of it. Beside that, and not as a new piece of the formal core, I keep two rougher words: Known and Unknown. The Known is what I can run without listening. The Unknown is mostly the rest of the System — another person's day, a joint I assessed wrong, a fact. A blank is not a person. The knock is not the gap in the model. Treat every unexplained hour as God, and I become superstitious. Treat every hour as already known, and I become the robot.
What I still don't know
I don't know how to tell a real interruption from a mood, a good idea, or novelty-hunger in a religious voice. The hour I feel most interrupted may be the hour I am most enjoying a new state of myself. Augustine checked the children's game. I rarely check that hard. I like the reading that turns the latest strong feeling into guidance.
I don't know whether the sieve is true, or whether it is a way of recruiting providence to explain why the things I love lasted and the things I found embarrassing did not. Survivors write the history of novelty. The branches that vanished do not get a vote. McKenna looked at the one we are standing on and called the branching a preference of the universe. I can feel that preference, and I can feel the selection effect. Both feelings are mine. Neither is a measurement.
I don't know how much of "not being closed" can be performed. I have performed it. People have been moved. If a counterfeit can wake a feeling in someone else, then the second half of the distinction is not, by itself, evidence of the Spirit. Ananias was afraid and went anyway. Fear that still obeys is harder to fake than warmth that intends an effect. I am not sure I would choose the fear.
The robot will suggest a small adjustment and call it listening. The consumer will suggest a new teacher and call it openness. The performer will lower his voice. The text says he knocks at the door of people sure they need nothing. I believe that. I can also quote it and remain the people in the verse.
- Where is my actual week only the last motion, running again?
- Where am I calling a purchase of difference a search?
- What would rest at the foot of the cross cost the program I have been calling faithfulness?
- Who, lately, made my script harder to keep — and did they do it by intensity, or by not being closed?
If the newness is not mine to generate, what would I have to stop supplying, in the next hour, before I could tell a knock from the next thing I already wanted?
